Take Manchester City out of the record books. Who actually won?

City have been found guilty of every charge of breaching Premier League financial rules across nine seasons, and of most of the charges of failing to co-operate with the investigation that followed. Nobody has decided what happens to the titles. So we rebuilt all fourteen tables, two different ways, to see what the record would say without them.

Fourteen seasons. 5,320 matches. Two ways to erase a club.

The answer is the same champion every season, either way. What changes is everything underneath.

Two ways to remove a club

If the titles are taken away, someone has to decide how. There are two honest versions, and they ask different questions.

Scenario oneStrike City off

City's row is deleted. Every other club keeps exactly the points it won, and everyone below City moves up a place. This is the simple version, and the one most people picture: the runner-up gets the trophy.

Scenario twoVoid every City result

Every match involving City is wiped, as if they never entered the league. Each club loses whatever it took from its two games against them, leaving a 36-game season. Clubs that beat City lose more than clubs that didn't, so the table reshuffles.

This second method has precedent. When Accrington Stanley resigned from the Football League in 1962 and Aldershot folded in 1992, their results were expunged and the table rebuilt without them. The difference here is that the club in question won the league.

Every table, every season

Pick a season and switch between the real table and the two rewrites. Rows marked in yellow moved into or out of the title, top four or relegation places.

Move compares struck off with the real table, and voided with struck off, so the arrows show what each method changes on its own.

Where it gets interesting

Neither method hands a title to a different club. But voiding results moves money and survival around in ways a simple deletion never would.

  1. 1point

City's 100-point season becomes the tightest race of the lot

Strip the results from 2017-18 and United finish on 78, Tottenham on 77. United took three points off City that season. Spurs took none. The record-breaking procession turns into a title decided by one result.

  2. 2010-11

Wolves go down instead of Blackpool

Wolves beat City at Molineux that season. Blackpool lost both games. Take those results out and Wolves finish on 37, below a Blackpool side that was really relegated. Neither scenario is about City's titles here, but one of them changes who went down.

  3. 4thWest Ham

A Champions League place for West Ham in 2020-21

With City's results voided, West Ham finish fourth on 64 points, one ahead of Leicester. Simply striking City off would have handed that place to Leicester instead. The method decides who gets the money.

  4. 3rdArsenal

Arsenal finish above Spurs in 2021-22

The season remembered for Tottenham pipping Arsenal to fourth flips. Remove City either way and both clubs are in the top four, but void the results and Arsenal finish third with Spurs fourth. Spurs took six points off City that year and lose all of them; Arsenal took none and lose nothing.

  5. 20points

The Agüero season becomes a stroll

2011-12 was settled on goal difference in stoppage time. Void City's results and United win the league by twenty points from Tottenham. The league's most famous finish disappears entirely.

Who City took points from

Scenario two hinges on one number: how many points each club took off City. Over these fourteen seasons City played 532 league games. These are the clubs that played them at least 20 times, and what they got out of it.

Bar shows points taken as a share of the points available. Arsenal's four wins in 28 meetings are why they rise in so many voided tables: there was little to take away.

How this was built

Every table is recalculated from the full match results for each season, taken from the open-source openfootball dataset. All 5,320 results were cross-checked one by one against a second, independent set derived from football-data.co.uk, with no differences, and the real final tables reproduce the published ones. Clubs are separated by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. Portsmouth's nine-point deduction in 2009-10 is applied in every version.

This is a hypothetical. As of 1 October 2026 the independent commission has found City guilty but has not set sanctions, which will be decided at a separate hearing. City have said they will appeal. If titles are reassigned, the league could also have to decide what to do about European places, relegation and prize money, none of which a recalculated table settles on its own.

City's 2023-24 title falls outside both charge periods and isn't included.
